The Salzburg Schranne
The Salzburg Schranne is a weekly market held on the square right in front of St. Andrew’s Church. Every Thursday, merchants from the city and surrounding communities offer regional specialties, flowers as well as arts & crafts for sale.
Since 1906, the “Weekly Market for Regional Products” has been held in front of the St. Andrä Church. Alongside the Nasch- and Brunnenmarkt in Vienna, the Salzburg weekly market is one of the largest and most well-known markets in Austria. Starting at 5.00 a.m., farmers and gastronomy experts offer fresh and high-quality specialties. While flowers and plants are highly sought after in summer, in winter, Advent wreaths and traditional palm bunches are sold over the counters of the approximately 190 stalls. For those who prefer culinary delights, a hearty fried chicken, a clear fish soup, or a typical Salzburg snack from the sausage stand is recommended.
According to traditions, the name originates from the urban grain depots of the Schrannen building at Mirabellplatz and in Schrannengasse.
Since its beginnings, the Schranne has enjoyed great popularity, as evidenced by the allocation of stalls: one generally has to wait up to ten years for a stall.
